Kinetic/Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) have re-emerged as a vital technology in many areas such as smart grid, renewable energy, electric vehicle, and high-power applications. FESSs are designed and optimized to have higher energy per mass (specific energy) and volume (energy density).
Texas A&M University has developed a shaftless flywheel energy storage system [17,18] with a coreless motor/generator . Figure 1 provides an overall indication for the system. In this paper, the utiliza-tion of a flywheel that can power a 1 kW system is considered. The system design depends on the flywheel and its storage capacity of energy. Based on the flywheel and its energy storage capacity, the system design is described.
