Car giant Stellantis and Chinese electric battery manufacturer CATL announced on Tuesday that they are going to build a major battery factory in Zaragoza, in northern Spain. In a joint statement, they said the plant will start producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries by the end of 2026.
The Spain lithium-ion battery market is entering a new stage of rapid development. The Zaragoza plant of global automotive giant Stellantis is partnering with CATL, the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, to expand electric vehicle production and build a large-scale battery manufacturing facility in Spain.
CATL’s upcoming battery plant in Spain will be an add-on to its existing facilities in Germany and Hungary. These operations have made CATL a global leader in battery innovation, with the company consistently topping in EV battery usage and energy storage shipments worldwide.
If finalized, the joint venture between CATL and Stellantis in Spain will reshape the Spain lithium-ion battery market, further integrating the European EV ecosystem. For CATL, this would add another overseas plant to its growing global footprint.
