The Northern Lights CCS project off the coast of Norway has enough storage for the equivalent of 750,000 car emissions every year in the first phase. Equinor’s Smeaheia storage site, located to the south of Northern Lights, has the potential to increase storage capacity many times over.
The Norwegian Minister of Energy officially opened the Northern Lights CO 2 transport and storage facility in Øygarden, near Bergen, Norway. The Northern Lights facility is a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies. With the opening, Equinor’s cross-border facility is ready to receive and store CO 2.
The first phase capacity of 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year is fully booked, and the joint venture owners are working to further increase the transport and storage capacity. In March 2025, the owners of Northen Lights announce a phase two of the groundbreaking CCS-project. NOK 7.5 billion will be invested to increase the total injection capacity from 1.5 to a minimum of 5 million tonnes of CO 2 per year.
