Full text access Abstract Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are essential for integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing grid stability and reliability. However, fast charging/discharging of BESS pose significant challenges to the performance, thermal issues, and lifespan.
How- ever, for grid-scale energy storage, cost, cycle life, and safety take precedence over energy density. Fast charging and discharging are critical in all three cases. Fast charging is anticipated to charge a battery within minutes, similar to a gas station, which is crucial for our busy lives.
Fast charging/discharging rates accelerate battery degradation through side reactions, lithium plating, mechanical effects, and heat generation. Low temperatures limit charging rates in cold regions due to reduced diffusion coefficients and sluggish interfacial kinetics.
It can help reduce the time required to recharge a battery, making it more convenient for users. Fast discharging can also be important in certain applications where a large amount of power is quickly required, such as in large electric grid stations, power tools, or EVs during acceleration.
