Rooftop solar and battery storage can reduce energy costs and provide affordable back-up power for over 60% of US households, but benefits often bypass the high outage risk and disadvantaged communities most in need.
For battery storage, we applied a power ratio of 0.4 (2.5-hour duration) and a lifetime of 15 years. The battery storage cost structure was simplified to a fixed cost of US$1,633 for PII, a variable cost of US$856.24 kWh −1 proportional to capacity and an O&M cost of US$20.8 kWh −1 yr −1.
To ensure affordability, we impose a constraint that the expected household electricity costs under the back-up plan do not exceed those of a scenario with no solar or battery. This ensures that installing solar–battery systems for backup does not increase a household’s overall electricity expenses relative to having no installations.
Despite growing interest, the viability of solar and battery systems for providing cost reduction and outage backup across diverse US households and regions remains understudied. The alignment between system viability and areas of greatest need receives little attention, as do equity considerations in access to such systems.
