A large-scale power outage struck significant parts of the Czech Republic on Thursday, severely affecting Prague and several regions, including Liberec, Ústí nad Labem, and Central Bohemia Public transport across the affected areas has been severely disrupted, and emergency services are responding to multiple incidents linked to the outage.
Some of the outlying regions are reporting their power being restored, but the captial Prague and many other areas are still without mains power. A hospital which was hit by the huge power outage has said it is "fine" after switching to back-up power sources.
Karel Hanzelka, a spokesperson for Prague’s electricity supplier PRE, explained the issue as a failure in the upper-level transmission grid. “To put it simply, electricity stopped flowing into Prague from the outside,” he said. This left vast areas of the capital without power, including the eastern bank of the Vltava River.
Public transport across the affected areas has been severely disrupted, and emergency services are responding to multiple incidents linked to the outage. In Prague, tram, metro, and bus services were halted across the entire right-bank area of the city. The outage, which began just before noon, initially shut down all metro lines.
