Space-based solar power generation involves in-space continuous collection of solar energy. This involves placing large solar panels on satellites in orbit, where they are exposed to much more sunlight and can continuously collect energy without being affected by clouds or the day-night cycle.
Space-based solar power (SBSP) could offer a centralized, weather-independent energy resource to help address these challenges. 6 By operating above the atmosphere and outside the day-night cycle, SBSP promises continuous gigawatt-scale power.
At that price, space-based solar can displace up to 80% of wind-plus-solar capacity and cut battery needs by more than 70%, although seasonal storage such as hydrogen remains essential. The planar array design remains uneconomic at its 2050 forecast cost.
