A flow battery is a type of rechargeable battery that stores energy in liquid electrolyte solutions contained within tanks. Unlike traditional lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries, flow batteries offer longer life spans, scalability, and the ability to discharge for extended durations.
Flow batteries can be altered to suit requirements of a task. You can change how much power you generate (in kilowatts) and how much storage (in kilowatt-hours). If you want more storage, you increase the volume of electrolytes in the tanks. As you increase storage capacity, the cost per kWh of stored energy decreases dramatically.
Flow batteries are positioned as a prime option for long-duration energy storage, addressing the challenge of intermittency in renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Governments around the world are advocating for increased adoption of these energy sources.
