For grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), grounding and bonding is essential for safety and performance. The goal of grounding and bonding is to achieve customer-targeted resistance levels. These low resistance levels allow fault currents to easily discharge into the ground, protecting people, equipment and the BESS itself.
The direct current generated by the batteries is processed in a power-conversion system or bidirectional inverter to output alternating current and deliver to the grid. At the same time, the battery energy storage systems can store power from the grid when necessary 24, 25.
BESTs are increasingly deployed, so critical challenges with respect to safety, cost, lifetime, end-of-life management and temperature adaptability need to be addressed. The rise in renewable energy utilization is increasing demand for battery energy-storage technologies (BESTs).
