Assuming 70 % of rooftop areas are covered with PV systems with 20 % efficiency, we estimate Japan''s total rooftop PV capacity as 1155 GW generating 1017 TWh of electricity. It is 1.2 times larger than Japan''s total electricity generation (834.8 TWh in Fiscal Year 2022).
In Japan, the country’s Sixth Strategic Energy Plan aims for solar PV to account for approximately 14–16% of its electricity generation by 2030, which equates to roughly 108 GW of solar capacity . As of December 2023, Japan has 72 GW of solar capacity, with approximately 14.62 GW (20.3%) coming from Residential Solar PV (RPV) .
Rooftop PV could generate 1,017 TWh annually – exceeding Japan’s total electricity generation in 2022. A PV-only system could supply an average of 45% of municipal electricity needs.
