Even though the tower was originally built as a symbol of the Soviet Union, it’s still considered to be a great symbol of Moscow and Russia today, similar to the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral on Red Square. Today it is not only unique in the signal power radio and television transmitting station, and meteorological observatory, a giant lightning rod, and, of course, one of the most recognizable symbols of Moscow. From an architectural point of view it is a flower that grows out of the heavens.
The Ostankino Tower stands at 337 metres (1106 feet) tall, making it the tallest free-standing structure in Europe. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Moscow from two observation decks: a glazed deck at 337 metres; and an open-air deck at 340 metres.
