The purported benefits of foldable containers are numerous (if not yet proven). They are said to be able to not just reduce transportation costs, congestion and carbon footprint, but also alleviate space constraints at seaports (e.g. Konings and Thijs, 2001, Bandara et al., 2015 ).
However, this does not generate revenue and incurs container management costs (CMCs). Some container carriers may use foldable containers (FLDs), such as four-in-one designs, instead of standard containers (STDs), in order to minimize the costs associated with relocating empty containers.
One study suggests that foldable containers could result in a 50% reduction (25 million TEUs) of total volume of empty containers shipped globally per annum in 2010, equating to over US$1000 savings per empty container ( Boile et al., 2004).
