In February 2025, South Korea finalized its 11th Basic Plan for Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand (BPLE). The plan makes some progress toward the country’s decarbonization goals, reflecting calls to reduce fossil fuel dependency in the power generation mix while increasing the use of carbon-neutral energy.
This modeling approach provides confidence that an 80% clean electricity grid in Korea is operationally feasible. Sustained declines in costs for wind, solar, and energy storage technologies create new opportunities to lower electricity supply costs and reduce emissions in Korea’s electricity sector.
The share of off-grid non-domestic and domestic systems has continued to decrease and represents less than 1% of the total cumulative installed PV power. The PV electricity in 2022 corresponds to ~4,9% of total electricity generation (626 448 GWh) in Korea.
