SINGAPORE – As Singapore seeks to harness as much sunshine as it can to maximise its limited renewable energy sources, it needs to improve technologies that can store excess solar energy from the day. One such technology is energy storage systems (ESS), which are essentially giant batteries packed in containers that store electricity for later use.
The solar arrays deployed under initiatives like JTC SolarLand feed direct current (DC) voltage into inverters. These inverters convert the power into alternating current (AC), which then passes through step-up transformers to reach the required voltage before being fed directly into Singapore’s electricity grid.
PUB started studying the feasibility of deploying floating solar PV systems at reservoirs in 2011 to assess their solar potential and possible environmental impacts.
