In addition, efficient energy storage systems are crucial to ensure a reliable and resilient power supply. One main challenge faced by current technologies regarding the synthesis and storage of renewable fuels is the lack of efficient catalytic materials and electrode materials.
As such, liquid metals, featuring high electrical and thermal conductivity and dynamic surface that is resistant to coking , have gained considerable interest as a novel catalyst for renewable fuel synthesis. A typical liquid metal droplet consists of a metallic core and a thin layer of oxide skin .
The liquid metal catalyst was demonstrated to also be stable, maintaining its activity over the course of 10 days. In addition, liquid metals have been shown to assist in the conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons, by stabilizing the commonly used zeolite catalyst ZSM-5.
