Constant current (CC) charging is a simple and straightforward method for charging supercapacitors. In this method, a constant current is applied to the supercapacitor until it reaches its rated voltage. The charging time depends on the capacitance value and the charging current.
Most super capacitors (supercaps) can be discharged down to 0 V and recharged to their maximum voltage with the manufacturer recommended charge current. A simple voltage regulating LED driver with constant current, usually regulated by sensing a low side, series current sense resistor, then a voltage clamp can be used to charge a super capacitor.
A common rule of thumb is to limit the charging current to the supercapacitor’s rated current. The charging voltage should not exceed the supercapacitor’s rated voltage, to prevent overvoltage damage. A voltage regulation circuit is necessary.
The top-balancing charging method has been a simple and effective method to charge supercapacitors, but the energy efficiency is relatively low. Other charging algorithms have been proposed with the objective of suppressing the voltage deviation or extending the lifetime of supercapacitors .
